We are now open! Important Message from Dr. Tom on Cosmetic Patient COVID Safety Responsibilities. Read More

On January 14th, cosmetic surgeons from around the globe descended upon the newly resurrected New Orleans for the annual meeting of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgeons. This year’s focus, “Technological Advancements in Cosmetic Surgery.”

Among the many topics covered:• Stem Cell Advances
• Facial Resurfacing/Skin tightening, Fillers and Injectables
• Empowerment Leadership and Practice Management
• The Evolution of Anesthesia and Keeping it Safe
• Laser-assisted Minimally Invasive Surgery
• The Short Scar Facelift Revolution
• Essentials in Post-Op Patient Care
• Navigating High-definition Liposuction

Also at the conference were nearly 100 exhibits, each showcasing the latest products, procedures, and technology available, all designed with groundbreaking safeguards to ensure the best patient outcomes. Exhibited technologies featured at this year’s meeting included:
• Cosmetic and medical lasers utilized for hair removal and skin care
• New technologies in scar healing and prevention
• Virtually painless procedures for hair restoration and grafting

I had the honor and privilege to present at this wonderful forum that fosters cosmetic surgery education. But more on that in a bit…

The keynote speaker was TV personality and cosmetic surgeon of The Doctors show, Dr. Andrew Ordon who trained with several of the Academy’s leadership surgeons and is a diplomat of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Ordon spoke on his charity outreach experience, performing reconstructive surgery for those in need.

Nonsurgical ProceduresPopular is the growing trend for nonsurgical cosmetic procedures that can dramatically improve appearance. The concept that as we age our face deflates has resulted in a move to add volume to the face with fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm, Voluma and Sculptra. The results can lead to a natural rejuvenation.

Hot TopicsThe hot surgical topics were based on two of the most popular cosmetic procedures, eyelid surgery and breast augmentation & lifts.

The eyes are the window to the soul. Upper eyelid surgery can give a more wide eyed look. It was stressed that conservative removal of excess skin and fat is in order. This leads to a very nice natural appearance.

Breast augmentation continues to grow in demand. And for many mothers whose breasts have dropped, a beautiful technique of breast lift with augmentation was presented by Dr. Ted Eisenberg a noted expert in the field. I was again honored to present my experience with breast lifts in this same forum with positive comments from Dr. Eisenberg. I have now adopted some of Dr. Eisenberg’s techniques to offer our patients a safe and effective means of breast lifts with augmentation.

As we move into a new year, it is reassuring to see that a more conservative approach to many cosmetic surgeries is making the axiom of “less is more” a reality.

In Health and Beauty,

Dr. Tom
